Fluoride and Dental Sealants in Elgin, IL
Keeping your teeth healthy with preventative dental services is essential. Seeing you regularly allows us to monitor your oral health and note any changes that may have occurred since your last exam. When we find and correct problems when they’re still small and easy, you can avoid a lot of complicated dental problems in the future.
We believe in taking the necessary steps to help you avoid ever developing dental problems. Preventative procedures like the application of sealants and fluoride at the office of Won Sung, DDS, significantly minimizes your family’s risk of decay and other problems like gum disease.
Sealants Keep Healthy Teeth Healthy
The most likely place for cavities to appear in children and teens are the back teeth. We can protect these teeth with dental sealants, a thin plastic coating applied to irregular chewing surfaces of molars. As the name implies, sealants protect healthy teeth by literally “sealing” the rough surfaces of the tooth to keep out germs and bits of food debris.
Sealants are very effective when used on permanent first molars that usually appear when a child is about six years old, and permanent second molars that erupt around age twelve. For the best outcome, the sealants should be applied to these teeth soon after they’ve erupted, before they have a chance to decay.
The process of applying sealants is short and easy and doesn’t require any drilling or removal of tooth structure. First, we thoroughly clean the tooth and apply a special gel. Next, the tooth is rinsed and dried.
Finally, Dr. Sung carefully paints the sealant on the tooth. With proper oral hygiene and regular visits to the dentist, sealants can last as long as five to ten years. But we’ll check their condition during every exam and reapply if necessary.
While sealants are most effective for children, adults with healthy teeth can also benefit from the additional protection that sealants provide.
Fluoride – A Basic Building Block for Good Oral Health
Sealants, diligent oral hygiene, and healthy diet choices all contribute to controlling tooth decay. However, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) states that, when used appropriately, the most effective and widely used method for preventing cavities includes the use of fluoride.
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that helps prevent cavities in children and adults by making the enamel of the teeth more resistant to the acid attacks that cause tooth decay. Most of us are exposed to fluoride from multiple sources, but if we find you or your child don’t receive sufficient fluoride or you’re at higher risk for cavities, we may recommend a topical application at our Elgin dental office. Fluoride varnish applied by Dr. Sung provides extra protection against tooth decay when used in addition to brushing.
